“Soleful Laughter: National Fall Prevention Week, Where the Right Shoes Steal the Show!”

Sep 19, 2023 | Safety | 0 comments

Speaking from experience, as someone who has fallen a few times, I can’t emphasize enough the crucial role that proper footwear plays in preventing falls.

Wearing the right shoes is not just about style; it’s about safety. Inadequate footwear can significantly increase the risk of slips, trips, and falls, which can lead to serious injuries.

I love my slip-on sandals but each of my falls have been caused by them. Once while I was putting groceries in my car, my sandal slid off; caught on the curb and before I knew it, I was on my butt. The second time I was rushing up the stairs and my slipper caught on the stair; down I went face first. Luckily in both of these cases I only had a few bruises but it could have been so much worse.

While proper footwear is only a small part of fall and injury prevention, it is something we can easily upgrade. Here are a few reasons why good footwear is essential for everyone wanting to stay out of the hospital.

  1. Traction – helps you maintain your balance on slippery or uneven surfaces.
  2. Support – maintains adequate arch support and cushioning to help distribute weight evenly.
  3. Ankle Support – reduces the chances of twisting or rolling your ankle, a common cause of falls.
  4. Comfort – comfortable shoes encourage you to walk with a natural gait, minimizing the risk of stumbling.
  5. Secure Fit – well fitted shoes prevent your feet from sliding inside your shoes, enhancing stability.

Most of us have are favorite shoe stores but I’ve had really good luck with Footsmart. I have had to wear orthotics for many years and have never had a problem when using this company.

As we transition into the fall season with its unique challenges like rain, fallen leaves, and changing weather conditions, it’s essential to prioritize your choice of footwear.

Stay safe and take care!
